We are currently offering the following (2) TESOL programs to our international students:

  1.  The PreK-12 Initial Certification M.S.Ed in TESOL is designed to accommodate the needs and goals of a wide range of ESOL professionals. This program is full time (6 credits per semester) and may be completed in two years with careful planning alongside a faculty advisor. We maintain strong partnerships with local schools where student teaching may be completed. The internship may be completed part time over two semesters. This is the only graduate teaching degree of its kind in Maine and is designed to support learners worldwide across a variety of teaching contexts, particularly those working in PreK-12 environments. The 39-credit program offers courses in a blended option for international students.
  2. The Master of Science in TESOL program gives graduates skills and knowledge in theory, research, and practice in TESOL and prepares graduates for careers in TESOL education and scholarship. The program is grounded in theories of second language acquisition and applications to classroom environments with culturally and linguistically diverse learners and teaches pedagogical theory and best practices that can be applied right away in a classroom environment. The 30 credit program offers courses in a blended option for international students.

TESOL students have opportunities to present at conferences, such as the Northern New England TESOL, the Massachusetts Association of Teachers of Speakers of Other Languages, and the American Association of Applied Linguistics.

Steps for international admission requirements:

In addition to the standard application materials, international students must also complete the following tasks before their application will be reviewed:

1. Provide financial documentation that shows that you can support educational and living costs.

2. Pay the US $50 application fee (except Canadian applicants)

3. Submit an official evaluation of college-level transcripts approved by one of the following transcript analysis agencies: National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) or the Association of International Credential Evaluators (AICE) .

4. Evaluations must be course-by-course and provide verification that the degree you hold is equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in the United States. Note: some universities in Canada are exempt.

5. Additional requirements for international transfer applicants: If you currently hold an F-1 student visa in the United States and wish to transfer to USM from another college or university, you will need to complete a Request transfer form with the foreign student advisor at your current college or university.

6. International admission representatives: we maintain relationships with international student recruitment agencies in several countries. These agencies are authorized to help you determine if the University of Southern Maine is the right choice for you.

Graduates of TESOL programs may be eligible to work in the United States for a year after graduation, provided they meet certain criteria. To learn more about this option, contact Kimberly Sinclair at ksinc@maine.edu

Many overseas colleagues think of the master’s degree as the bridge between a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science and a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy). We can offer the bridge that they need. TESOL advisors will provide students with PhD preparation support.
