Reflections Magazine

Reflections is a curated collection of original poetry, prose, art, and photography by our OLLI members.

You must be an OLLI at USM member.

Your work must be original, created solely by you, and not previously published online or in print. If you have submitted this work to another outlet for consideration and are waiting to hear if it will be accepted by that outlet, please let us know as part of your submission.

You may submit up to two items for consideration. Please let us know in what “category” you think your piece(s) fits: poetry, prose, photography, or fine art.

As the submitter, you are responsible for getting the submission in the required format (see below).

Deadline for submissions for 2026 is April 18.

  • Put “Reflections Submission 2026” in the subject line with your last name and first name, and the category.
    • Example: Reflections Submission 2026, Rumpelstiltskin, Avery, photo
  • If you are submitting two works, please submit them separately.
  • Copy and paste the following outline into your email with the appropriate info:
    • My name as it should appear in the credits:
    • The name of my work:
    • The category of the work (Poetry, Prose, Photography, Fine Art):
    • My phone number:
    • My e-mail address:
    • This is the medium:
      • Add as much information here as you think might help us learn about your process. For instance, is it a digital image or a prose poem. We may edit for length.
    • Artist’s statement:
      • This is what inspired me to create this work:
      • Please keep text descriptions of the works and statements about your process to 40 words.
    • A brief bio or self statement of 25 words or fewer.
  • Review the style requirements for submission as described below.

We prefer Times Roman or Garamond, 12 pt.

We accept files from Microsoft Word or Google Docs. We cannot accept Apple Pages or Adobe PDFs.

Do not include your name in the document. Make sure the document has the title on it.

All written submissions should be in final state: review for typos, check place names, and confirm word count.

Poetry should be spaced according to how you want it seen when printed. If there are irregularities in the poetic content such as spelling or spacing, we will assume that this is how you want your poem to be seen and read.  

Prose should be double-spaced and no longer than 1,000 words.

Take a digital photo of the piece and send that as your submission.

We accept these formats: jpg, jpeg, gif, png.

The definition of any photo must be sharp enough for publication. The size of a jpg or jpeg file is a good rule of thumb. Files should be at least 500 KB (Kilobytes). File sizes over 1 MB (Megabyte) are a bare minimum for full-page printing.

The size of a photo is usually found by displaying the photo and clicking on “Properties” or on an information icon that looks like the letter “i” in a circle. You can also consult your help files, visit a phone or computer store, or search online for how to determine the file size of a photo.

When emailing your submission, please send it as “original size.” Do not compress the file.

Files should be at least 500 KB (Kilobytes). File sizes over 1 MB (Megabyte) are a bare minimum for full-page printing. Aim for 1.4 to 5.4 MB in the photo’s raw form; don’t resize using a photo editing software (that just makes up pixels).
