Literary Tour of England, September 30 – October 10, 2026

An England experience only its literary greats can provide. The tour includes:

  • London, home of Shakespeare’s Globe Theater, the Dicken’s Museum, Sherlock Holmes’ 221B Baker Street, Westminster Abbey and the Poets’ Corner, the British Library, and Churchill’s War Room – the birthplace of Cold War spy novelists.
  • Chawton and Bath: Jane Austen’s homes and the beautiful Bath with its Roman baths and 18th century architectural masterpieces
  • Stratford-upon-Avon: The town where Shakespeare was born, married, and died – we’ll visit his home and gardens.
  • Oxford: A richly historical university town with medieval colleges as well as pubs frequented by the Inklings – JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis – and by Colin Dexter, whose Inspector Morse novels (and TV spin-offs) are set in Oxford.
  • Winchester: Walk on the streets of this medieval city, visiting King Arthur’s Round Table and Jane Austen’s grave.

Plus an optional 3-day excursion to the beautiful Lake District where we’ll visit Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage and cruise on Lake Windermere, followed by a visit to the Bronte Parsonage in Haworth.

Pricing ranges from $4,659 to $6,938 based on occupancy. All travelers must purchase an insurance package. Additional costs for excursions may apply.

Take a Course Before You Go

Couple your journey with one (or all) of these spring offerings. See our course page for details. Courses not required to join the trip.

  • From the Crown to the Ground: English History & Seven Literary Greats Dive into seven historical literary periods including kings and queens, political rivalries, literary and artistic trends, and a glimpse of everyday life on the farm and in cities. (course)
  • From Penny Lane to Willesden Green: English Songs of Love & Dissent Explore songs from traditional 18th century ballads to contemporary works. Listen, look, and share thoughts about songwriters who express their feelings for England through music. (workshop)
  • Sherlock Holmes: The Devil’s Foot Delve into one of Sherlock’s timeless mysteries set in the Cornish countryside. (workshop)

Join OLLI for a new set of field trips this summer. Take one, or all six! We will meet at each site. All ticket purchases are included in the registration fee.

Maine Audubon

July 8, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. • $15

We’re looking forward to an upcoming visit to Maine Audubon in Falmouth for an informative talk on birdwatching and tips for spotting local species. Use of binoculars, spotting scopes, and useful apps will be included. After the presentation, a guided tour of the scenic trails will give us the chance to explore diverse habitats up close and put our new skills into practice. Picnic tables are available for your picnic lunches conveniently near Audubon’s active birdfeeders.

The Portland Museum of Art & The Winslow Homer Studio

July 16, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. • $67

A small group of 12 members will meet at the Portland Museum of Art and then be taken to Winslow Homer’s Studio where you can step into the artist’s life. New interactive displays, soundscapes, and lighting will provide context for his creations and the nearby landscape. The group will return to the PMA for free time in the galleries or lunch on your own.

Maine Jewish Museum

July 22, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. • $7

Join us for a visit to the Maine Jewish Museum in Portland followed by a walking tour of the India Street area. Learn about Maine’s Jewish heritage and visit their rotating art exhibition in this beautifully restored synagogue. Then explore the quiet charm of the East End while taking a meaningful dive into local history, art, and culture.

Seashore Trolley Museum

July 29, 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. • $19

Seashore Trolley Museum is the first (1939) and largest electric railway museum in the world, with more than 250 vehicles from almost every major city in the U.S. that had a streetcar system. Join us as we ride three miles in a restored trolley from the early 1900s and take a walking tour of the restoration barn, car houses, and grounds with our docent. Note: the museum has a mobilift for access to the trolley if needed.

Pineland Farms

August 5, 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. • $19

Located in the rolling hills of New Gloucester, Pineland Farms is a working farm, vibrant business campus, and year-round educational and recreational destination for visitors of all ages. During our visit, we will board the Pineland trolley for a guided tour of the historic campus, the beautiful perennial gardens, and the farm, where we will meet a variety of animals. After the tour, you are welcome to enjoy lunch on your own at the Pineland Café or browse the Farm Market for fresh produce, meats, and local goods.

“The Trail to Freedom” Walking Tour

August 12, 9 – 11 a.m. • $32

On a leisurely walking tour of Underground Railroad landmarks and the Eastern Cemetery, learn about important people and events in Portland’s Black History and Maine’s contributions to emancipation. Bruce Garrow returns as our guide for this new tour. Rain date: Thursday, 8/13.
